Mesoscale Circulation Growth under Conditions of Weak Inertial Instability

چکیده
The hypothesis that inertial instability plays a role in the upscale development of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) is explored by sampling environments that supported the growth of MCSs in the Preliminary Regional Experiment for STORM (Stormscale Operational and Research Meteorology) (PRE-STORM) network with high quality special soundings. Secondary circulations that occurred in the presence of inertial instabilities were analyzed and documented using rawinsonde data with high spatial and temporal resolution from the PRE-STORM field program. Additional examples of MCS environments were examined using data from the Mesoscale Analysis and Prediction System. Results show strong divergence and cross-stream accelerations occurred at upper-tropospheric levels where inertial instabilities were present. These accelerations were not uniform over the domain but were focused in the regions of instability. Also, the analyses of these data showed that regions of inertial instability may be more commonplace than is typically assumed. The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System was used to increase the understanding of the basic processes and secondary circulations that enhance MCS growth in inertially unstable environments. Model results indicate that the strength of the divergent outflow was strongly linked to the degree of inertial stability in the local environment. The results also showed a strong dependence on the magnitude of the Coriolis parameter. Finally, experiments using varying degrees of vertical stability indicated that there was also significant sensitivity to this

Enhanced vertical mixing within mesoscale eddies due to high frequency winds in the 2 South China Sea 3 by 4
13 The South China Sea is a marginal basin with a complex circulation influenced by the 14 East Asian Monsoon, river discharge and intricate bathymetry. As a result, both the mesoscale 15 eddy field and the near-inertial energy distribution display large spatial variability and they 16 strongly influence the oceanic transport and mixing. 17 With an ensemble of numerical integrations using a reg...
متن کاملDynamic Instability Analysis of Transverse Vibrations of Functionally Graded Rectangular Plates under Moving Masses
In this paper, dynamic instability due to parametric and external resonances of moderately thick functionally graded rectangular plates, under successive moving masses, is examined. Plate mass per unit volume and Young’s modulus are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the plate and obey a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituent. The considered rectangu...

[1] The near-inertial internal wave energy distribution is investigated in the southwestern Japan/East Sea using vertical round-trip travel time of sound (t) data from 23 pressure-sensor-equipped inverted echo sounders (PIESs) and data from Aanderaa recording current meters (CMs). Currents associated with low-mode near-inertial internal waves are slightly inclined and displace the thermocline v...
متن کامل3D Mesoscale Finite Element Modelling of Concrete
Concrete is non-homogeneous and is composed of three main constituent phases from a mesoscopic viewpoint, namely aggregates, mortar matrix, and interface transition zone (ITZ). A mesoscale model with explicit representation of the three distinctive phases is needed for investigation into the damage processes underlying the macroscopic behaviour of the composite material. This paper presents a f...
متن کاملInferring dynamics from the wavenumber spectra of an eddying global ocean model with embedded tides
[I] The slopes of the wavenumber spectra of sea surface height (SSH) and kinetic energy (KE) have been used to infer "interior" or surface quasi-geostrophic (QG or SQG) dynamics of the ocean. However, inspection of spectral slopes for altimeter SSH in the mesoscale band of 70 to 250 km shows much flatter slopes than the QG or SQG predictions over most of the ocean. Comparison of altimeter waven...
